Sicily was known by the Romans as Trinacrium, meaning ” star with three points ” due to the island’s distinct triangular shape. The Trinacria symbol is the head of Medusa (a gorgon with a head of snakes), surrounded by three bent running legs ( the symbol of the 3 legs meaning here is appropriate because this symbol stands for competition and man’s progress. As such, this symbol lends itself to a feeling of perpetual motion. In this case, the three legs stand for an idea of foundational balance. The symbol describes a fiercely independent people. It essentially says: “No matter what you do to me, or how many times you assault me – I will always stand and move forward.” ), and three stalks of wheat. The symbol has also been adopted by the Sicilian government and is located on the center of Sicily’s flag.
