As my first experience of Boar brush, I bought this Semogue 610 and an Omega Pure bristle Shaving Brush – Badger Effect 81052 so I could do a direct comparison. They are almost identical in looks and price so it’s hard to know which one to go for. I’d been concerned about the smell of a Boar brush as I had seen people mention there’s often a ‘funk’ attached to them, until they get a chance of being worn in. The Semogue 610 (and the Omega) didn’t really have any unpleasant odour. All I could detect was a smell like talcum powder. Perhaps they put that on to mask the smell, I don’t know. Since using it, I’ve only had one day where there was a slight ‘wet dog’ odour but that passed very quickly and it took on the smell of my shaving soap ( Zingari Man’s ‘The Distiller’). Compared to the Omega, the Semogue was a lot softer from the first use and remains that way after a few weeks use. It still has a good exfoliating effect but without any harshness. Again, compared to the Omega it feels more substantial and solid with more weight in the handle, which is something I preferred. I think it lathers more effectively than the Omega but it’s relatively close. Both produced good lather although the Omega was a bit thirstier. Overall, for the price I think it’s an excellent starting point if you want to try a Boar brush. Now that I have, I can’t see myself going back to synthetic any time soon.
